Approval and Licences Required by
Since it is water intensive industry and majority of the units depend upon borewell water for the water processing needs, units are supposed to obtain NOC [ No objection certificate ] before commencement of the bore.
Bureau of Indian Standards- Requirements
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare passed a gadget and made it compulsory to obtain BIS mark for all bottled water units operating in India in 2000 and became operational within months.
There were only two categories specified:
- Natural Mineral Water to be governed under BIS : 13428:2006
- Packaged Drinking Water to be governed under BIS:14543:2006
Under the above protocol, manufacturers are required to observe strict measures in terms of :
- Borewell
- Hygiene
- Civil Works
- Plant & Machinery
- Laboratory
- Technical Staff
- Documentation
- Storage
- Disposal of Waste
The manufacturers are supposed to submit an application under prescribed format and after inspection by respective BIS Unit, the samples are drawn and sent to independent laboratory for testing. Upon receiving satisfactory results, the prescribed fee is taken and ISI mark is given to the unit.
FSSAI
The Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) is the supreme authority which is responsible for regulating and supervising the food safety. So it is mandatory to take FSSAI Basic Registration as per the law.
